WHO WE ARE
Adelante is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was created in response to the lack of legal services available to immigrants in deportation proceedings. This shortage is likely unsurprising, considering that the immigration court is in Memphis - several hours away and on the opposite end of the state. The consequences of that shortage can be devastating when a deportation amounts to a death sentence. Even still, immigrants are not entitled to free legal counsel (unless they have committed a crime - and then the representation would only be for the criminal matter, anyway) yet, removal defense requires sophisticated legal analysis and extensive documentation. We have provided multiple Asylum workshops in the community, gave lectures on the history of immigration law in the United States, and developed online tools to further assist individuals in immigration court proceedings.
Our mission is to bridge the gap between immigrants and the legal community. We provide immigration-related educational services to immigrants, immigrant advocates, students, lawyers, and the larger East Tennessee community that is grappling with the changing immigration policies. We provide pro-bono legal services to immigrants while using the experience as an educational opportunity for lawyers and law students. We are committed to develop a community of practice for immigration attorneys and practitioners in East Tennessee. We aspire to inform, excite and empower individuals so that they are able and responsive to the needs of the immigrant communities that surround them.
