what we do
in 2019, project adelante began in Knoxville, Tennessee, in response to the lack of legal services available for immigrants in deportation proceedings. this shortage is likely unsurprising, considering that the immigration court is in Memphis - several hours away and on the opposite end of the state.
but the consequences of that shortage can be devastating when a deportation amounts to a death sentence.
even still, immigrants are not entitled to free legal counsel (unless they have committed a crime - and then the representation would only be for the criminal matter, anyway) yet, removal defense requires sophisticated legal analysis and extensive documentation.
to bridge this gap, adelante offers
workshops for groups grappling with immigration policies
an online, self-help questionnaire for immigrants already present in the us
a community for aspiring immigration attorneys and practitioners in east tennessee
